China in Mexico

The rain is intermittently refreshing our patch of this planet. I can’t say that it is raining every day, as it should be, and that is a little worrying. When it does rain, it really rains and the frogs in my pond are happily croaking away, but the fact remains the rains are not a daily occurrence, as they should be...





The big news this week is the visit by China’s leader Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan to Mexico. It’s all about boosting exports to China since we receive massive amounts of imported goods but are hopeless about exporting back to them; there is a huge deficit, apparently. It seems that steps were made to sell, successfully, a lot of tequila and pork, as well as textiles, but aside from that, who knows.

It seems China is after Mexico’s oil so there was stuff going on there too, Chinese investment in Pemex, big bucks exchanging hands. Plus over a 100 Chinese companies visiting at the same time, with a view to investing in Mexico. Suddenly we are all pro China....

What kept us amused though, and this type of news is always good for taking the spotlight off the commercial part, it turns out that Peng Liyuan is a brilliant singer in China, and a real role model in terms of femininity and fashion. Well, she hit it off big time with our esteemed President’s wife, Angelica Rivera, who is an actress, famous in the world of telenovelas (Mexican soap operas), and so she whisked Peng off to the Televisa studios where the telenovelas are made and where Angelica has worked on many a production. It seems Peng Liyuan is a fan of hers so what better way to cement Chinese-Mexican relations than through telenovelas and host Televisa, king of the genre in Latin America. Photos of the two first ladies on front pages everywhere, surrounded by Televisa telenovela actors... A real coup for Televisa. Now that we know the Chinese have a liking for tequila the sky’s the limit...
